Mobile phone users to gain free access to 0800 numbers

mobilephone3It has been reported that Ofcom will begin a new campaign that aims to allow mobile phone users to call 0800 numbers for free from summer 2015. In addition, the organisation wants to make the cost of service numbers more transparent. This is an important move for call centres to be aware of because it could affect incoming traffic.

Ofcom is working with the telephone answering service industry to ensure that the consumer information campaign comes together. The UK Calling campaign is due to start in January 2015. It will run for six months and provide information about call charges. Its main goal is to educate people on two major changes coming next summer.

The first of the changes it will showcase is the new pricing model for 118, 08, and 09 calls. Rates will be created from a service charge set by the company and an access charge fixed by phone operators. Phone companies will need to make the latter charge clear on bills and inform people of costs when they are taking out new contracts.

The second change will be seen by mobile phone users, with freephone 0800 or 0808 numbers becoming free to use from mobiles as well as landlines. Ed Richards, Ofcom’s chief executive, said: “For a long time there has been a lack of transparency in the cost of calling 08, 09 and 118 numbers. These changes will be very significant for UK telephone customers, and are designed to help build consumers’ confidence in using the full range of phone services.”
