Ecommerce Companies May Be Required To Publish Phone Number
A shock ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) could see many ecommerce companies having to publish a contact telephone number on their sites.

A German consumer group has successfully brought an action against an insurance company which failed to give one of its customers an effective way to communicate. The ECJ ruling appears to increase the minimum amount of contact information that must be displayed on business websites.

The court ordered the insurer to make sure its telephone number appeared on its website. This has far reaching implications for the interpretation of the European Ecommerce Directive which states that "contact details" must be provided.

This latest ruling has made it clear that contact details must include more than an email address alone, which in effect makes a telephone number mandatory.

This rule applies to most commercial websites.
