PCS Union Strike Hits Call Centres |
The first day of strike action by Public and Commercial Services (PCS) Union has impacted numerous government departments including 999 Police emergency response and HMRC
call centres.
Revenue and customs call centres were worst hit, admitting that around 26,000 staff had walked out as part of the strike. The public have been advised to avoid calling until Wednesday, when call centres will be fully operational again.
Border controls and Job Centres were also affected by the industrial action.
Mark Serwotka, PCS general secretary, said:
“The Government needs to stop burying its head in the sand and wake up to the scale of the anger that has been generated by their plans to cut jobs on the cheap.”
Tessa Jowell, Minister for the Cabinet Office, playing down the impact of the action commented that:
“Across the country services to the public are largely unaffected. The vast majority of staff earning £20,000 or less with be little affected by the changes.”
